Oscar Boycott

A boycott has continued to erupt as actors and actresses across America are upset at the lack of diversity that is shown in the nominations of this years Oscars gala.

Spike Lee and Jada Pickett-Smith are among the few who has started this movement as Pickett-Smith released a video last week speaking on her frustration of this years nominations. Husband and very known actor Will Smith backed up his wife last Thursday on "God Morning America" and they have both pledged to not attend the event on February 28th, according to the Staten Island Advance. "The nominations reflect The Academy, The Academy reflects the industry, and the industry reflects America," said Smith, who is also a two-time nomination selection.

Being an African-American with aspirations of working in the movie world one day, it hurts to see no diversity whatsoever in this years Oscars. I think it's time that we research and investigate how The Academy chooses each nomination and to see if everything is going the way that it should. Most feel that gaining recognition for being a great actor is already tough enough being African-American, but it's even worse when you do produce great work and still do not get recognized for it.

As I do understand that there are multiple reasons that could have lead the nominations to be how they are, everyone must understand that this can't continue to happen. We live in a time where we are steadily trying to improve the diversity in our country and set-backs like this shouldn't happen. The movie world is very diverse and it's time for the Oscars to support that.
